The procedure of applying heat to the sacral or lumbar region by retaining warm medicated oil with oil within a specially formed frame on this area is popularly known as kati vasti. It is a highly effective treatment for back pain and spinal disorders. The term vasti here is a misnomer. Vasti generally refers to the administration of the medicine through the rectal route by using the specially designed vasti instrument. But the kati vasti does not involve any such procedure rather it is a localized form of svedana procedure.
In this treatment the patient is made to lie face down on the Droni and a rectangular reservoir made of black gram dough is built up on the lower back, around the lumbo-sacral area and lukewarm medicinal oil, that alleviates pain and strengthens the bone tissues, is slowly poured into it.
The treatment helps to increase the blood circulation, strengthens muscle and connective tissues and lubricates the joints keeping them flexible and pain free. It stimulates and nourishes nerves relieving pain and numbness. Also it strengthens back muscles which maintain normal curvature of the spine..
